Two of Hearts: Collecting Stories for Insight

Provisional · Revisable

Gather lived accounts from a community as field data for the Hearts pipeline, with consent standing and revocable throughout, so that the studies built on them stay faithful to what people said and never become a file kept on the people who said it.

Overview

A cell that reasons about a community from theory will describe its own preferences and call them findings. The Hearts pipeline exists to stop that, and it can only stop it if something real enters at the top. This technic is the intake. Where the Ace admitted a member on one described finding, the Two makes listening a standing practice: lived accounts gathered as field data, from which the depersonalised studies at the third rung are built.

What is kept from the older material is the anthropology cell’s work of gathering ethnographic accounts of how people actually reason and live. What is removed is what the source set over it: accredited anthropologists as the only permitted collectors, the university as the condition of the work rather than a later check on it, and a board of ethics holding the final say. Those belong to later rungs or to nowhere. This technic is graded by its own standard like any other.

How it works

An account is gathered to find something out, never to prove something already held. That line is the whole of this technic’s honesty and the easiest thing in it to lose, because a movement always has a use for a moving story. A collection assembled to supply the cause is not field data; it is manufactured consensus with a face on it.

Everything downstream inherits whatever distortion enters here, which is why fidelity is the intake’s discipline. The fifth proposition holds that a population accumulates capacity only where minds stay connected and transmit with sufficient fidelity; here that means the account survives the passage from teller to record in the teller’s own order and vocabulary, rather than being translated into the movement’s terms at the moment of capture. A story rewritten on the way in cannot afterwards be checked against anything, because the thing it was is gone. Regard being conditional always, consent is likewise a standing condition and not a signature at the door: a teller may amend, restrict, or withdraw for as long as the record exists, and a community that gives its accounts is owed sight of what was made from them.

Four things are excluded by name, each a floor against capture rather than a decision made on the cell’s behalf. No dossiers or profiles: what is held is an account, indexed by the question it speaks to and bound for depersonalisation, never a file accumulating around a person. No covert collection, because a person recorded unknowing is a subject and not a participant. No purchase of accounts, though a teller’s costs may be covered. And no analysis at the intake, which belongs at the third rung where it is done across accounts and can be checked. What the cell wants to understand, whom it asks, and what counts as enough remain the cell’s to decide.

Operation

  1. Name what you are trying to understand, and write it where the tellers can read it. A stated question can be missed; an unstated one is always confirmed.

  2. Say what the account is for before you take it: what is recorded, who holds it, who may read it, that it is bound for depersonalisation, and that consent may be withdrawn at any point. Where a teller is a minor or a dependent, the floors no arrangement may waive govern, and their own agreement is required alongside that of whoever is responsible for them.

  3. Gather in the teller’s own terms. Ask open questions, follow their order and vocabulary, and record what was said rather than what you take it to mean.

  4. Record conditions rather than verdicts, in the manner of Reading a Community’s Morals: what was done, what was available to whom, who was connected to whom, which way things were drifting.

  5. Return the record to the teller for correction before it is kept. What they change stands; what they strike is struck.

  6. Hold the accounts close and the method open. Custody sits with the named holder and reaches no further than the work requires, while the question, the method, and the counts of accounts and refusals are published where the community can see them.

  7. Keep the withdrawal route live, and honour an amendment or a withdrawal without argument and without delay.

  8. Hand the accounts on to depersonalisation on a standing schedule. An intake with no outflow has stopped being a collection and become an archive of people.

Cautions & failure modes

The testimony harvest. A cell that already knows what it will find collects until it finds it. The tell is that no account has surprised anyone in some time; at that point the work has stopped gathering evidence and started gathering endorsements.

The file that forms by accident. Nobody sets out to build a dossier. One forms when accounts are filed under the names of those who gave them and left there long enough to accumulate. Index by question and move on the schedule.

The extraction that gives nothing back. A community that hands over its accounts and never sees what was made of them has been mined, not regarded. What the studies find comes back, in language the community can read.

The practised interviewer. This is the failure that arrives from doing the work well. A collector skilled at putting people at ease is also skilled at leading them, and a teller who trusts you will tell you what you appear to want. The account comes out fluent, coherent, and quietly shaped by the listener — and coherence is the exact signal the third proposition warns is not truth. Rotate who collects, and check the smoothest accounts hardest.

The collection that never closes. Gathering is the pleasant end of the pipeline; synthesis is harder and public testimony harder still, so a cell can settle into permanent intake and call it diligence. The accounts are owed their passage upward, and holding them is not caution but a slow default.

Prerequisites

  • Collectors who have cleared the Ace of Hearts entry, with the bias audit run and current. No entry, no collection.
  • A community the cell is part of or working within, read in the manner of Reading a Community's Morals. No gathering at a distance.
  • A named holder of the accounts and a written route by which a teller may amend or withdraw, both settled before the first account is taken.
