Six of Hearts: Submitting a Study for Outside Review

Provisional · Revisable

Submit the wing-refined studies to reviewers outside the movement who owe it nothing, sending the depersonalised text and never the accounts behind it, so that the pipeline finally meets a check which does not share its premises, without a teller's trust being spent to buy the verdict.

Overview

Everything the pipeline has produced so far has been checked by people who share its premises. The cell that collected the accounts stripped and synthesised them; the wing that refined the study works from the same vocabulary and expects the same shape of finding, and says so in its own technic — it catches errors of craft and cannot catch errors of frame. The room at the fifth rung can correct a description of itself, which is worth a great deal and is not a check on method. A movement that stopped here would accumulate studies that agree with one another and would experience the agreement as evidence, which is the third proposition’s warning arriving exactly where the corpus said it would.

This rung is the check from outside. The depersonalised study goes to reviewers who are not members, are not funded by the movement, and owe it nothing, and what comes back is kept whether it is an acceptance, a rejection, or a finding that the method is unsound. What is earned is a record of having been judged on a study. It is not a rank, not a licence, and not a warrant that the movement’s account of a community is correct.

What is kept from the older material is the external validation of the moral-anthropology work — the studies held answerable to evidence rather than to the movement’s hopes. What is removed is any use of an acceptance as standing, and any exclusive relationship with a single institution, because a movement with one validator has acquired a centre outside itself. This technic is graded by its own standard like any other.

How it works

What travels is the depersonalised text and nothing else. The custody set at collection does not move, the record of whose account is whose stays where it was put, and no exception is made for an outside reviewer, however senior and however reasonable the request. The hard case is concrete and should be expected rather than discovered: many reviewers and most publishers now require the underlying data as a condition of consideration. Where that condition is set, the submission is withdrawn. The consent given at the second rung was consent to this pipeline, not to a repository beyond it, and no teller can consent on behalf of the neighbours who would recognise them in a transcript. A cell that cannot afford to withdraw has not met the third prerequisite and should not have submitted.

The reviewers must owe the cell nothing. Outside the movement, not funded by it, not dependent on it, and drawn by lot from qualified critics wherever the pool allows, which is the rule of distance carried across the movement’s own boundary rather than stopping at it. Plurality matters as much as distance: submissions go to many doors over time and never settle into a standing relationship with one department, because a single sympathetic institution returns the movement’s coherence to it with a letterhead attached, and that is worse than no review at all.

The result is kept either way and published whole. A rejection, a savaging, or a finding of unsound method is filed entire and published entire, in the manner of Speaking in the Open, and the critique is then answered by revising the study — what changed, what the cell declined to change, and why. A judgement received and not acted on is a credential rather than a grade. A cell that publishes its acceptances and buries its rejections has built a publication record and called it validation.

The verdict then goes back down the ladder rather than up. The community that was studied hears what outsiders said about the description of itself, in the room at the fifth rung, and where an amendment touches what tellers said, the amendment is carried back under the floors that governed the collection. The Hearts discipline is that the community sees how it has been read; it is not discharged by showing them the first draft only.

Several things are excluded by name. No payment for a favourable reading and no arranged amplification. No pseudonymous or fronted submission: a cell unwilling to be judged under its own name is not being judged. No offer of access to the community, its data, or its people as an inducement to review, since that trades the tellers’ trust for the verdict. And no treatment of an acceptance as licence to lower the bar on the next study.

One boundary is worth stating because two rungs look alike. The Two of Clubs submits a Clubs cell’s methodology and its training work to outside critique; this rung submits a Hearts study of a real community. Neither gates the other, and this rung depends on no Clubs rung at all — the Hearts ladder is not sealed and does not become sealed by resembling something that is.

Operation

  1. Confirm the chain: a study refined at the fourth rung and presented at the fifth, with the wing’s review and the room’s corrections attached.

  2. Tell the studied community that the study is going out, to whom, and what will be published if it is taken.

  3. Send the depersonalised text and nothing else. No accounts, no key, no sample, no exception for a reviewer who asks well.

  4. Withdraw rather than release. Where source accounts are required as a condition of review or publication, the submission ends there and the reason is published.

  5. Choose reviewers who owe the cell nothing — outside the movement, not funded by it, drawn by lot from qualified critics wherever the pool allows — and spread submissions across many doors rather than one.

  6. Submit under the cell’s own name, without payment for a favourable reading, without arranged amplification, and without offering access to the community as an inducement.

  7. Publish the result whole, whichever way it goes, in the manner of Speaking in the Open.

  8. Answer the critique by revising the study, and publish what changed, what was declined, and the reason for each.

  9. Carry the verdict and the amendment back to the room at the fifth rung and to the tellers where it touches them.

Cautions & failure modes

The accounts released to save the submission. The request will be routine, framed as ordinary research practice, and refusing it will look like evasion. Everything the third and fourth rungs did to protect a teller is undone by one compliant data-availability statement, and the harm lands on people who will never see the journal.

The friendly department. A relationship with sympathetic outside reviewers is pleasant, efficient, and improves over time, and it converts the only genuinely external check in the pipeline into an extension of the wing. The tell is that submissions stop being sent anywhere else.

The acceptance waved. A published study turned into standing is the Two of Clubs failure arriving in another suit. What was judged is one study by people who read it. It says nothing about the next one and nothing about the movement.

The rejection quietly dropped. Not buried, exactly — simply not written up, while the acceptances are. The record becomes a marketing history without anyone deciding it should.

The community told last. The verdict travels upward and outward naturally and reaches the studied community late or not at all, by which point the movement has been validated in public for a description its subjects have not heard judged.

The study that publishes well. This is the failure that arrives from running the technic well. A cell that becomes good at getting through review begins choosing subjects, methods, and framings by what reviewers take, and the pipeline bends toward what an academy currently finds interesting. The organ built to sense a community has learned to sense an audience instead, and it will show every sign of improving while it does.

Prerequisites

  • A study refined under the Four of Hearts and presented under the Five of Hearts, with the wing's review and the room's corrections attached. No public testimony, no submission.
  • The studied community told that the study is going out, to whom, and what will be published if it is taken.
  • A submission the cell can afford to withdraw. Where a reviewer or publisher requires the underlying accounts as a condition, the submission is withdrawn rather than the accounts released.
