Seven of Clubs: The Bias Audit for Readings
Have published readings re-graded by lot-drawn members who did not make them, against criteria fixed before the re-grading and with the result published beside the reading rather than replacing it, so that no reading can be quietly steered and no auditor acquires a veto over what may be read.
Overview
Two rungs of this suit have run while stating, in every publication, that the check designed for them did not exist. The standing perception office said its readings were tested only by events, slowly and ambiguously. The reading turned on the movement said the same at higher stakes. This is that check, and it arrives late by the ladder’s design rather than by oversight: an independent re-grading is only worth anything once there is a body of readings to re-grade and a movement that has proved it will publish a finding against itself.
The instrument is narrow on purpose. Members who did not make a reading, drawn by lot, re-grade it against criteria published in advance, and what they produce is a re-grading published beside the reading. They do not revise it, do not withdraw it, and do not decide whether it may stand. A body that could suppress a reading would be a licence over the movement’s own perception, which is the thing this suit refuses at every rung.
The seal, and its gate. This rung is sealed and unlocks on the completion of the rung beneath it and nothing else. Authoring, reading, or filing this technic unseals nothing, and running it unseals nothing further; reading across opposition sits at the eighth rung and stays shut, and a movement whose readings audit well has earned a record and not an opening.
What is kept from the older material is the independent re-grading of readings by non-authors. What is removed is any audit of the reader: nothing here examines a person’s mind, motives, or private calibration. This technic is graded by its own standard like any other.
How it works
The object is the reading and never the reader. What is examined is the published document: whether the finding follows from the evidence set beside it, whether the intervals were real rather than asserted, whether the contrary evidence was recorded or smoothed away, whether a rate rests on repeated windows or on one, and whether the arrangement of the material did the work the axis statement was supposed to do in the open. All of that can be checked by someone who was not there, which is the point.
Nothing in this technic touches the standing Bias Audit, and the boundary is a floor rather than a courtesy. That exercise is private, self-directed, held by one mind, and read by no one else. A re-grader may not ask to see one, may not ask whether one was run, and may not record that the question arose — the most conscientious auditor being the one who asks in order to confirm the discipline was kept, exactly as the dossier-to-résumé audit already warns. Calibration is evidenced by the quality of the reading and by nothing else available here.
The re-grading is published beside the reading and the reading stands. This follows the wing’s practice in the other suit: criticism travels with the work rather than resolving it quietly beforehand, so that whoever reads the finding reads the objection at the same time. Where a re-grading holds, the office answers in the open — what it changed, what it declined to change, and why — and where it does not hold, the office says so and that too is published. Nobody’s approval is required for a reading to exist.
Steering is a pattern rather than an error, so the re-grading reads across readings as well as within them. Whether findings have drifted in one direction over successive windows; whether the same domains keep being read while others are not; whether what the office chose to look at is itself carrying a conclusion. Selection is the quietest place a reading can be steered, because nothing in any single document is wrong.
Seating is by lot from those who did not author what is being re-graded and did not hold a seat in the office during the window under examination, on stated terms with no consecutive holding and no standing panel. A permanent audit bench is a second perception office with a veto, and it would be worth capturing for exactly the reason this one is worth building.
The recursion is named rather than solved. Who re-grades the re-graders is a real question with no higher body to answer it, and inventing one would build the tower this architecture exists to dissolve. The answers available are the ones the corpus already uses: the audit body’s own criteria, rates, and re-gradings are published in full; it is itself re-graded by lot on the same published criteria; and the outside critics engaged at the rung below receive its work as they receive the office’s. The recursion terminates in the open record and in people who owe the movement nothing, and it terminates there imperfectly.
Operation
-
Publish the criteria for what a re-grading checks before drawing the first reading.
-
Seat re-graders by lot from those who did not author the reading and held no seat in the office during the window, on stated terms with no consecutive holding.
-
Re-grade the document: does the finding follow from the evidence, were the intervals real, was contrary evidence recorded, does the rate rest on repeated windows, did the arrangement do the argument’s work.
-
Leave the reader alone. No examination of anyone’s mind, motives, or private bias audit, and no record that the question was asked.
-
Read across readings for drift in one direction, for domains repeatedly read and repeatedly not read, and for a conclusion carried in the selection.
-
Publish the re-grading beside the reading. Do not revise it, withdraw it, or rule on whether it may stand.
-
Have the office answer in the open — changed, declined, and why — and publish where the re-grading did not hold.
-
Publish the audit body’s own criteria, its rates, and its re-gradings, and submit them to re-grading by lot on the same terms.
-
Send the audit’s work to the outside critics engaged at the rung below, and state in every publication that nothing above this rung has opened.
Cautions & failure modes
The audit that becomes a veto. A re-grading that can delay publication, require amendment, or withhold a finding is a permission over the movement’s sight. It never arrives as a claim of authority; it arrives as a sensible interval before release.
The reader audited instead of the reading. Turning an examination of a document into an examination of the person who wrote it is easy, interesting, and produces exactly the file on persons the suit was filtered to prevent. The private bias audit is the boundary and it is not negotiable.
The standing panel. Skill accumulates, the same people are drawn or volunteer, and the lot becomes a formality over a fixed group. That group is a second perception office holding a check on the first, which is one body more than the structure can watch.
The audit that only reads documents. Every individual reading passes and the sequence tells a story nobody examined. Steering lives in the pattern and in what was never selected, and an auditor working document-by-document will certify a drift in full.
The recursion pretended away. The honest position is that this check is itself unchecked except by publication and by outsiders. A movement that answers the question by building a further body above this one has begun constructing the tower rather than distributing the sight.
The independently audited reading. This is the failure that arrives from running the technic well. Once an audit works, its approval becomes the thing that makes a reading credible, inside the movement and outside it, and the evidence stops being what anyone examines. The movement will then hold findings it believes because they were audited, which is the third proposition’s error rebuilt at one remove, inside the instrument designed to catch it.
Prerequisites
- A Six of Clubs completed — the reading turned on the movement, run to its fixed publication date and published whole. That rung earns the upper half of the suit, and where it has not been run honestly this one is read and not run.
- Published readings to re-grade, with their evidence, intervals, and contrary evidence attached as the office was required to publish them.
- Criteria for what a re-grading checks, written and published before the first reading is drawn.
