OPS-012 · Economy

Running an Investment Campaign

Provisional · Revisable

Shift a firm's conduct through open, shared ownership, held to one rule: leverage, never capture.

Overview

A movement confined to words can move opinion but not the material arrangements that shape opinion, and reaching those means reaching into the economy. This technic uses ownership openly and in concert to move a firm’s conduct toward cooperative forms. Because economic power is the most efficient consolidator there is, it is the operation that comes nearest the very thing the movement forbids, and it earns its place only through the discipline below. The raw form reached for a majority stake, an absorbing company holding veto power, and policy pursued through manufactured agreement. The corrected instrument keeps only leverage that links the movement’s purposes to a firm’s conduct without fusing the two into one body.

How it works

The instrument is held within four limits, and a campaign that breaks any one of them has stopped being leverage and become capture. It is bounded: used to redirect a firm’s conduct, not to absorb the firm. It is reversible: positions can be unwound, so influence never sets into permanent ownership. It is transparent: conducted in the open, because capital organised in secret has already failed the honesty the movement stands on. And it is plural: spread across many holdings and many hands, so the instrument of redirection does not harden into the chokepoint it was meant to dissolve. Above all the movement holds itself to its own limit, applying to its own economic power the same test it would apply to a hoarding owner.

Operation

  1. Organise aligned holders in the open. Gather people who already have reason to want a firm’s conduct changed, and pool their holdings openly.
  2. Acquire enough to gain a voice, and no more. Enough to put a proposal, to vote, to place a representative and be heard, is leverage. Enough to control the firm is capture.
  3. Name the specific change of conduct sought, and show how it can serve the firm as well as the movement.
  4. Keep every position reversible, so that leverage never sets into permanent ownership.
  5. Spread the campaign across many holdings and many hands, so the instrument does not gather into a single block or a single broker.

Cautions & failure modes

The exempted self. The test applied to a hoarding owner must be applied, without flinching, to the movement’s own economic power. A movement that exempts itself has not opened the economy, it has become a new centre of the old kind, and a quieter one.

The broken limit. The failure of any one of the four limits turns leverage into capture: a stake grown past voice into control, a position that cannot be unwound, capital organised out of sight, or influence gathered into one hand. Read which is slipping before it has slipped.

The manufactured crowd. Watch for the campaign reaching for staged agreement to support itself, paid amplification or numbers that are not real. That shortcut was renounced for the same reason capture is forbidden, since a movement sworn to protect honest transmission cannot corrupt it without dissolving its reason to exist.
