Fill the Chat

Provisional · Revisable

Put the movement in front of strangers by saturating a place's shared surfaces with its notice, posted by many hands.

Overview

The movement does not buy its way into the channels owned by the powers it questions, and it does not wait to be permitted onto them. It propagates the way ideas moved before the platforms existed, by occupying the ordinary shared surfaces of a place with a question the passerby is already carrying. To fill the chat is to saturate a town with a single notice, posted and reposted on the poles and boards and corridors where public attention still wanders freely, until the question becomes part of the texture of the street.

How it works

A poster does not persuade by argument; it works on the population through repetition and recognition. Seen once it is noise, seen a dozen times across a week it becomes a fact of the environment, and the mind begins to treat it as something already half believed by others. The notice names a discontent that most people carry without language for it, and the code printed beneath it converts that flicker of recognition into contact directly, with no editor, no algorithm, and no intermediary standing between the curious person and the movement itself. Because anyone can print it and anyone can place it, the work cannot be bought out, switched off at its source, or captured by whoever prints the most.

Operation

  1. Obtain the poster file and print it in quantity. Cheap and many beats few and fine.
  2. Walk your own area and find the lawful surfaces where notices already live: community boards, permitted posting poles, the windows of sympathetic shops, the corridors of places that welcome them.
  3. Place them where attention rests rather than rushes, and vary the locations so the same eyes meet the notice in more than one part of their day.
  4. Return often. Posters come down, and the work is in the replacing as much as the first placing; persistence is the mechanism, not a single push.
  5. Hand the file to others and ask them to fill their own chat in their own town. The aim is saturation by many hands, never a campaign run from one desk.

Cautions & failure modes

Post only where it is permitted, and never on private property without consent; a movement that begins by defacing the commons it claims to serve has already contradicted itself. Resist the wish to coordinate every placement from a centre, since the strength of the technic is precisely that it has no centre to remove. And measure the work by its reach across many hands, not by the volume any one person manages alone.

Prerequisites

  • The movement's poster file.
  • A way to print in quantity, and lawful public surfaces to post on.
