Deciding Together

Provisional · Revisable

Reach a decision as a cell that no faction can quietly capture, and leave it legible to everyone who must live with it.

Overview

A cell that cannot decide well falls back, sooner or later, on whoever is willing to decide for it. This technic gives the act of choosing a shape the whole cell can run without officers, so that the decision stays the cell’s own. It keeps the older tribunal method, in which an issue is put before the group and each member takes a side, and it removes the administrative class that once owned that method along with the ritual that gated entry to it. A cell does not need officers to decide well. It needs a shape for the conversation.

How it works

The structure distributes the choosing rather than concentrating it. The strongest case for and the strongest case against are each given equal floor, so that whatever is settled is settled against the real argument and not a weak copy of it. A deciding weight is reserved for those who hold no side, a small shared check that can halt a decision the committed parties are driving past good sense, because the people least invested in winning are often the ones still able to see the whole table. The reasoning is written in the open so the decision cannot later be argued again from memory, which favours whoever speaks loudest afterward. A decision reached this way binds only those who consent to be bound by it. The method distributes the choosing. It does not manufacture an authority to compel.

Operation

  1. State the question plainly and in writing where everyone can see it. A decision that cannot be put in one sentence is usually two decisions wearing one coat, so separate them first.
  2. Let anyone take one of three positions on the question as written: for, against, or neutral. No one is pressed to choose quickly, and a position may change as the discussion proceeds.
  3. Give the for and against positions equal time and equal floor, so that the strongest form of each case is put before the cell.
  4. Reserve a deciding weight for the neutral position, a small shared check enough to halt a decision the committed parties are driving past good sense.
  5. Record the decision, the date, and the reasoning that carried it, in the open where the cell keeps its common record.

Cautions & failure modes

The standing neutral. The weight belongs to whoever is neutral on this question, not to a class of permanent neutrals. The moment a fixed group owns the check, agency has concentrated and the failure this manual guards against is already advancing.

The private record. If the reasoning is held by a single keeper rather than carried in the open, the decision stops being the cell’s and becomes the keeper’s. What is protected here is the legibility of the choice, and it has to stay visible to count.

The manufactured authority. A decision reached this way still binds only those who consent to be bound by it. The structure distributes the choosing; it does not create a power to compel the unwilling.

Prerequisites

  • A cell that meets regularly and has work in front of it.
