Ace of Diamonds Protocol: Running the First Proto-Equitalist Business

Provisional · Revisable

Stand up and run a cell's first single-cell proto-equitalist enterprise, compensated in the grade rather than in ownership, so the work earns the cell its keep and funds its charitable and investigative wings without an outside patron.

Overview

The Ace of Diamonds Protocol is how a cell that has authored its constitution stands up and runs its first enterprise. Where the Ace of Hearts admits a member and the Ace of Spades founds the cell’s government, the Ace of Diamonds founds its economy: it is the economic genesis, the standing-up of a single-cell proto-equitalist business that earns the cell its keep. The chain is ordered and the order is binding. Hearts is entry, Spades is the constitution, Diamonds is the business, in that sequence and no other. A cell may not author its business before its constitution is signed and its grading metric submitted upward, because the business compensates by the grade, and the grade must be defined first. No constitution, no business. The protocol supplies the procedure and the floors only; it never hands a cell a business to run. This technic is graded by its own standard like any other.

How it works

The line this protocol is built to keep is the one OPS-016 grades against: method, not directive. The technic teaches how a cell forms and runs its own enterprise. It never hands the cell a business to operate, never a turnkey operation on someone else’s key, and never a directive strategy naming what to make or what to charge. It gives the procedure and the floors, and leaves the enterprise itself to the cell. The floors are capture-protections, not pre-made decisions: each forbids a way the economy could be captured, and none chooses for the cell what only the cell should choose.

The order of the chain is load-bearing, not ceremonial. Compensation in a proto-equitalist business is denominated in the grade, so the grade has to exist, and be defined honestly, before any money moves by it. That definition is the work of the Ace of Spades: the constitution that fixes what a grade equates to and how members grade one another, signed and its metric submitted upward for network review. A cell that stands up a business before its constitution is paying its members by a measure it has not yet written. So the prerequisite is absolute. No constitution, no business.

What makes the enterprise proto-equitalist is a small set of floors the cell may not write beneath. Compensation is denominated in the grade, not in ownership: members are not paid in shares they can sell, and no part of the enterprise is sellable equity. Access is graded, not extracted: members draw from the enterprise’s resource pool by their grade, not as private equity, dividend, or cash taken out of the firm. The grade that denominates a member’s draw is the one authored under OPS-018, graded by the formula at its current rung, and no other. An operational constitution governs the splits, naming what share of revenue is reinvested, what is paid out as graded draw, and what is held; the cell authors these splits within the floors, and the technic sets none of the numbers. And the enterprise funds the cell’s other two wings: under the three-wing structure the enterprise exists to pay for the charitable and investigative work, so the movement needs no outside patron.

The named exemplar is the design, printing, and sale of media. The enterprise wing’s traditional first instrument is the printing press and printed media, and it is the exemplar here for two reasons that hold together. It fills the offline S.T.A.M.P. media niche the movement needs filled, and it keeps the profit motive aligned with principle, because the work spreads the philosophy while it earns the cell its keep. Media is the named exemplar, not the only permissible enterprise. A cell may choose another craft, but the other craft must meet the same floors, and a craft whose profit pulls against the principle does not.

Grading at this stage is inherited, not redefined. It runs on the evolving formula named in OPS-018, and the rules live there rather than being restated here. At the single-cell stage the business sits at the Ace rung of that formula: pure peer review, averaged by trimmed mean, with every member grading every other. It grows toward the half-administrative rung once an administrative office is built from need, and toward the four-corner division as the wider ladder of guild, academy, and registry comes into being. The constitution names where the cell now sits and what it is growing toward, so the migration is expected rather than sprung.

This is the rung where the conflict of interest is sharpest, and it is named plainly rather than papered over. The pool is smallest, everyone grades everyone, and now real money rides on the grade. Trimmed mean catches a single bad actor whose grading drifts from the rest, but it cannot catch a whole cell inflating one another in concert, because there is no honest centre left for it to trim toward. So a floor stands from day one: an outside grader or an ethics-panel check, drawn from beyond the cell, guards against collective inflation. This is the load-bearing risk of the Ace rung, and the outside check is what the rung rests on.

Several things a founding enterprise might reach for are deliberately filtered out. There is no pooling of member surplus into deployable capital at this rung; that belongs to a later Diamonds rung and carries an open financing-legality question that needs external legal and financial review, so it is deferred here, not resolved. There is no share-issuing or sellable-equity structure, because compensation is denominated in the grade and ownership is not for sale. And the gift-economy and off-grid-sovereignty apparatus of the source is left behind: the cell takes the printing press and leaves the survivalist framing. Each of these is excluded by name, not passed over in silence.

Operation

  1. Confirm the prerequisite chain. Verify that the cell’s constitution is signed under OPS-018 and its grading metric submitted upward for network review. If it is not, stop here: no constitution, no business.

  2. Choose the craft. Take the named exemplar, the design, printing, and sale of media, or another craft the cell can sell that meets the same floors and whose profit does not pull against the principle.

  3. Author the operational constitution. Write the splits the enterprise will run on, naming what share of revenue is reinvested, what is paid out as graded draw, and what is held. Set these within the floors; the technic supplies no numbers.

  4. Denominate compensation in the grade. Pay members by their OPS-018 grade, drawn from the resource pool, never in shares, dividends, or any equity they could sell. Ownership is not the unit of pay.

  5. Stand up the conflict-of-interest guard. Secure an outside grader or an ethics-panel check, drawn from beyond the cell, before the first draw is taken, so that collective inflation is guarded against from day one.

  6. Run and grade at the Ace rung. Grade by the formula named in OPS-018 at its genesis rung, pure peer review by trimmed mean, and name in the record where the cell sits and what it is growing toward.

  7. Fund the other two wings. Direct the enterprise’s held and surplus share to the cell’s charitable and investigative work, so the three wings stand on the cell’s own earnings and the movement needs no outside patron.

Cautions & failure modes

Collective inflation at the Ace rung. The sharpest danger is not one member gaming the grade but a whole cell quietly inflating one another now that money rides on it. Trimmed mean cannot rescue a pool with no honest centre. The outside grader or ethics panel is not a courtesy at this rung; it is the floor the rung stands on, and an enterprise that runs without it is grading its own pay in private.

The business before the constitution. Standing up the enterprise before the Ace of Spades is signed pays members by a grade the cell has not yet defined, which means it pays them by whatever the founders feel in the moment. The order of the chain exists to prevent exactly this. Hearts, then Spades, then Diamonds, and not before.

Ownership creeping back in. The pull toward shares, equity, and dividends is strong because it is familiar, and it is the precise thing the floors forbid. Compensation is denominated in the grade or the enterprise is no longer proto-equitalist, whatever it calls itself. A share that can be sold is a capture waiting to happen.

The patron’s gift. An enterprise short of funds is tempted to take outside capital, and the gift arrives with a hand on the tiller. The three-wing structure exists so that the cell’s own work pays for the cell’s own charity and investigation. A movement funded from outside is steered from outside.

Capital pooling pulled forward. Pooling member surplus into deployable capital belongs to a later Diamonds rung and carries an unresolved financing-legality question that external legal and financial review must answer first. Reaching for it at the Ace rung is not boldness; it is taking on a risk the corpus has explicitly deferred and not resolved.

The survivalist carry-over. The source frames the enterprise inside a gift-economy and off-grid-sovereignty story that does not survive the filter. The instrument the cell inherits is the printing press, not the bunker. Take the craft and leave the framing, and say plainly that the framing was left.

Prerequisites

  • A cell whose constitution is signed under OPS-018, with its grading metric submitted upward for network review. No constitution, no business.
  • A craft the cell can sell, with the design, printing, and sale of media as the named exemplar.
  • An operational constitution authoring the cell's revenue splits within the floors, and an outside grader or ethics-panel check available from day one.

Grading is a human protocol (OPS-016) and no entry is graded by its author. Until an independent grader signs one, this entry carries no verdict — and an entry without a verdict is the normal state, not a defect.
